Think of New York and you conjure images of yellow cabs darting across Times Square, Broadway’s dazzling lights and memorable shows, steam pouring out from beneath the streets, the opulence of Fifth Avenue and its world-famous department stores, and the Statue of Liberty welcoming you to the nation’s shores. Visitors to ‘The Big Apple’ will, however, discover so much more lying beneath the city’s vibrant surface.
A stroll through the bohemian neighbourhood of Greenwich Village will reveal the city’s narrowest house, one of New York’s finest parks, and an array of shops, restaurants and nightclubs. If it’s culture you’re seeking, head for ‘Museum Mile’ along 5th Avenue, where the Metropolitan, Guggenheim, and National Museum of Design number amongst the many fine arts institutions. Broadway is, of course, renowned for its world-famous shows but if you fancy something less main stream, we suggest one of the numerous Off-Broadway productions, where smaller, more intimate theatres stage plays, musicals and revues of every genre imaginable.
SoHo, Little Italy, Chinatown tour
This 2-hour walking tour is a great way to see three districts in one whilst stretching your legs. You’ll visit the one- time artists’ refuge of SoHo and its Cast Iron District, ‘Lombardi’s Pizza’ – America’s first pizzeria – in Little Italy, and the confluence of cultures that is Chinatown, where eating and shopping your way through the bustling streets is hard to resist. You’ll also stop by film and TV locations, which include ‘Sex in the City’ and ‘Men in Black’.
Sightseeing with a difference
Here are three of our favourite ways
of seeing New York’s many sights.
Step back in time on a Central Park Horse and Carriage Tour, when your personal horse-drawn carriage will meander through the park and pass many famous historical landmarks. Circumnavigate Manhattan Island on a 21⁄2-hour cruise of the Hudson River, with views including the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Empire State Building. Finally, for sheer exhilaration, soar to the skies in a helicopter ride above Manhattan’s breath-taking skyline, for a birds-eye view of this iconic city.
