In the heart of the historic French Quarter, the 83-room boutique Bienville House gives the initial impression of a classic French manor rather than an upscale New Orleans hotel. Its elegantly appointed lobby is adorned with hand-painted murals and old-world furnishings, and a flagstone courtyard surrounds a crystal blue pool.
Treat yourself to a stay in one of the Deluxe rooms, where you may find a mahogany four poster bed, and you’ll be able to view out over the street or courtyard below. ‘Beachbum Berry’s Latitude 29’
(yes, really!) is a full-service restaurant and lounge, and though not open for breakfast, the Polynesian speciality cuisine is worth waiting for at lunch and dinner time.
Situated midway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, the mansion and grounds of this 19th century sugarcane farm – once the largest producer of sugar in the US – have been transformed to reflect the lifestyle of its one-time occupants. The Inn at Houmas House is a collection of quaint cottages nestled along an alleyway of oak trees, surrounded by lush gardens and with the Mississippi River just steps away. Each of the 21 rooms – whose rate includes breakfast and tour of the mansion for two – is decorated with old-world furnishings yet offers modern conveniences such as tea and coffee/maker and iron. Houmas House is renowned for its excellent food and wines, with three restaurants and its own wine cellars making casual or fine dining available throughout the day and evening.
Until the turn of this century a Federal Savings Bank, the Royal
St. Charles is now a modern boutique hotel enjoying a great location, just one block from the French Quarter. The stylish guest rooms feature coffee maker and iron/ironing board, the interior rooms being windowless – as are a number of French Quarter hotels –
and providing a little respite from the bustle of the streets below. ‘PJ’s Coffee’ in the hotel’s lobby is the place to grab a coffee and pastry but don’t worry about there not being an onsite restaurant because just steps away, the host of eateries include some of New Orleans' finest dining venues.
Set on the shores of Lake Charles in western Louisiana, the 1100-room Golden Nugget affords a range of amenities and activities which combine to offer the perfect escape. The championship golf course, private marina, lakefront beach, two-acre pool area and lazy river lend a true resort feel to the hotel, and if you’re looking for some night-time action, the slots and gaming tables of the Golden Nugget’s casino may prove tempting, even if just to watch! You’ll need to plan your meals, as there is a choice of eleven restaurants, serving anything from burgers to burritos, from Italian to Asian, with a choice of buffet or full table service. The hotel is also renowned for its live entertainment, with headliner concerts, comedy shows and internationally acclaimed bands waiting to take centre stage.
