The Catamaran is a Polynesian-themed resort hotel set on the sparkling shores of Mission Bay, a 15-minute drive from downtown San Diego. 310 accommodations comprise bedrooms, studios and suites, all immaculately furnished and offering separate living space, fridge and private balcony or patio with views out to the gardens or the bay. ‘Oceana Coastal Kitchen’ is the main restaurant, where Sunday Brunch is a ‘must-eat’. Tiki Torches, fire pit tables and lush palm trees are the setting for ‘Moray’s’, serving food throughout the day, and a variety of cocktails, wines, craft beers and soft drinks at its bar. The Catamaran boasts San Diego’s only beachfront spa, and with an outdoor pool and jacuzzi, resort water sports and bay-front beach chairs, kicking back in true San Diego style is the order of the day.
This 235-room Kimpton boutique hotel is situated just outside the lively downtown neighbourhood of the Gaslamp Quarter. The hotel
is notable for its stylish rooms with beach-inspired décor, offering spacious accommodation, modern amenities and the added convenience of a comfortable curved settee. ‘JSix’ is the main restaurant, located adjacent to the hotel and featuring fresh, organic and local produce, whilst ‘Upper East’ is San Diego’s most renowned rooftop bar, set alongside the attractive pool area with its woven loungers and covered cabanas. The hotel strives to create an intimate experience for guests, offering a free nightly wine and beer hour, free coffee and tea in the lobby, and free bicycles for exploring the city, with the emerging East Village, Petco Park baseball stadium and more than 100 dining and entertainment venues all within easy reach.
Set in the heart of the beautiful Coachella Valley, the Renaissance Indian Wells is a great option for a desert resort stay for both couples and families. 560 generously sized and delightfully furnished bedrooms and suites include coffee maker and mini-fridge, and all feature a balcony with wonderful views over the resort grounds, the adjacent Indian Wells Golf Club or the distant mountains. ‘Cava’ offers a casual patio setting for meals throughout the day and for dinner, ‘SPC’ presents authentic Italian dishes, whilst ‘Giu Sushi’ offers a wide selection of beer, wine and sake – and of course, sushi. Three heated pools include one with a sandy beach, ‘Camp Oasis’ welcomes children 4-13 years of age, ‘Spa Esmerelda’ offers soothing treatments, and the golf right next door is a must for enthusiasts.
For a trip out, we suggest the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, about
25 miles from the resort.
Set on the quiet East Palm Canyon Drive, the Saguaro is about a 10-minute drive from downtown Palm Springs, where the main shopping, galleries, restaurants, and bars are clustered. The hotel's 245 rooms are decked out in purple carpets, coloured curtains, and painted walls, and include coffee maker and mini-fridge,
each featuring a private balcony with views of the pool, mountains, courtyard or city. Two popular restaurants include the Mexican- inspired ‘El Jefe’, and ‘Rocco’s Electric’, both serving great margaritas, chilled beers, wines and a variety of cocktails and soft drinks. A large outdoor pool, weekly live events, a full-service spa, and fitness centre will keep you occupied at the hotel, whilst a free daily shuttle operates to downtown, and nearby attractions include Joshua Tree National Park, about a 45-minute drive away.
